I recently wrote a small free self defense book for a client. As a martial arts instructor I was perfectly qualified to cover the topic.
My client – New Albany’s Dynamic Self Defense in NE Columbus Ohio, was looking for a lead generation program that would not only generate leads but also educate the reader thereby creating a better qualified lead. The concept of a book was appealing because it could be used both online (on their website, in social media, etc.) as well as offline (in demo’s and public exhibitions).
Giving away a low cost items like a free book or report is always my first choice for lead generation. One of the main benefits is that aside from the initial cost there is next to no incremental cost for such a program because it is primarily digital. This means that the lead fills a quick online form and has the report emailed to them. This works well even offline where the client simply had a few iPads with WiFi access for visitors to their booth to fill the form. It takes less than 30 seconds from starting the form to getting the free self defense book!
The book I ended up writing is called “9 Killer Self Defense Myths Exposed” and as you can imagine it details 9 pieces of relatively common self defense advice and how they are actually myths. One of my personal favorites is the one about a gun or firearm being all the self defense you really need.
With all the media attention concealed carry and guns in general have been getting lately I meet more and more people who believe that a gun is the single solution to their self defense. I don’t argue against gun ownership, only that the reality of using a gun in self defense is much different than most people imagine. This leaves the situation were you either don’t have your firearm with you (often due to legal as well as practical realities) or you find it unavailable due to a malfunction of some sort.
It’s in these situations that reliance on a tool rather than training more comprehensive self defense techniques becomes a liability.
