Do You Have A Sherpa?
Do You Have A Sherpa?
Isn’t it funny how you can get hooked on a TV program?
My wife and I have gotten into “Everest – Beyond the limit” on the Discovery Channel which chronicles a group of amateur mountain climbers and their attempt to reach the summit of the tallest mountain on the planet: Mt. Everest.
Now this has to be one of the most dangerous activities a human could attempt. Even in the best of conditions people die. Not just any people, people who have spent months even years preparing themselves. Some even have extensive climbing experience and still perish. So we’re not talking about a Sunday afternoon hike in the backcountry.
What does this have to do with network marketing?
Building a network marketing business is a lot like climbing the peak of a mountain. To be successful you wouldn’t start with Mt. Everest – in fact no self respecting guide would even take on a newbie client.
You would start with a few easy summits and have an expert teacher lead you and teach to the basics – how to use your gear, the ropes and stay warm. After a few climbs you would progress to more difficult peaks and then and only then would you even think about training for an Everest assent.
Sure that seems logical, but that’s not how most people approach their business.
One common factor that leads to a lot of frustration, failure and financial loss is when newbie’s try to summit an expert peak without training to ensure their success. Part of the reason for this is that there is an epidemic of scammers (or maybe even just wishful thinkers) out there telling folks that they can indeed climb Mt. Everest, even if they have never climbed before, hate the cold and can’t stand the snow!
The solution is simple…
Use a little common sense and get yourself a sherpa. Every single climber of the show that reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 2007 said that they could not have done it without their sherpas. These local people are experts who not only know the mountain, but provide both logistical and emotional support to the climbers.
But there’s one more thing to think about.
Out of the people who die on Mt. Everest, most do so on decent. This means that they have actually reached the top, are on their way down to safe altitude and then something happens that ends their life. In fact, you are 10 times more likely to die going down the mountain then going up.
Network marketing can be like that too!
I have known over one hundred marketers with whom I have worked with personally or that have worked with one of my coaches (sherpas) that have risen to a level of success only to falter and washout in network marketing. In most cases their income exceeded $500 a month and some even went full-time before they unnecessarily crashed and burned. Why does this happen?
In mountaineering they blame it on “Summit Fever.” People push themselves so hard to reach the summit (their goal) that they forget that the goal is only a point along the way. Once at the top, you still need a lot of energy to get yourself back to base camp.
It’s similar in network marketing. It’s possible to push so hard, let enthusiasm and having your goal within sight blind you to the fact that there is another day, week, month, year after you reach your goal. Without a long-term action plan you place your success at risk.
